31 Horror Movies I Own #13: Drag Me to Hell

If there’s one man who knows how to do horror-comedy right, it’s Sam Raimi. So when the master of the The Evil Dead returned to his roots in 2009, I couldn’t have been happier—and Drag Me to Hell more than lived up to my expectations.

When I first saw the trailer, I was worried that it might be a re-hash of Thinner (a Stephen King film that fell a little flat). I mean, angry gypsy woman, a curse, that seems a little too familiar, right? But Raimi injected his story with tons of gross-out gore, spurting blood, and even a talking goat.

Sweet bank teller Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) chooses the wrong moment to show her bank manager she’s tough enough for a promotion when she denies the ancient Sylvia Ganush an extension on her home loan. Unfortunately for Christine, Mrs. Ganush lies in wait in the parking garage in order to curse her with an ancient demon called the Lamia.

What follows is a lot of tense jumpiness, flies going where no fly should EVER go, more body fluids than you can shake a stick at, and Raimi’s signature ridiculouso humor.

Likable nerd Justin Long plays Christine’s disbelieving boyfriend, but he’s kind of irrelevant. This movie’s about HER fight to survive, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make sure she beats the curse. And boy howdy, does she.

If you’re a fan of The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, and Army of Darkness, this is just as worthy of your time…although as with the others, some drinks might help turn up the enjoyment a bit. Image may be NSFW.
